I am going through the mbralign process on my Linux servers right now. I have a mix of distros, some CentOS and some Ubuntu. With CentOS, I've had no trouble thus far repairing grub using the instructions provided by NetApp (though I haven't done this with any servers running LVM). The first time I tried to fix grub on Ubuntu server, I ended up having to restore from backup. It was a total mess, and none of the instructions applied when using the Ubuntu server disk in rescue mode. I Googled for instructions, but nothing I found really worked out. I think some of this may have to do with LVM, but its hard to say. I can administer Linux, but I won't claim to know enough to say exactly what's going on in this case.
Has anyone successfully done this?
Also, I've noticed that restoring the VM to a snapshot I took before running mbralign netted me a oddly named vmdk. Before, it was UBHC02-flat.vmdk. Now, post restore, its UBHC02-flat.vmdk-mbralign-backup. Is that normal?
