Most of the important elements of NetApp Integrated Data Protection—such as Volume SnapMirror, Qtree SnapMirror, SnapVault, and MetroCluster—use either mirroring or replication. Understanding how these technologies work and how they differ from each other can make it much easier to choose the best data protection strategy.
I recently wrote a Tech OnTap article on NetApp data protection that describes how these various replication mechanisms work and the differences between them, along with guidelines for when you should select a particular technology. You can check out the article at http://communities.netapp.com/docs/DOC-9648.
Does NetApp provide the data protection options you need? What else might you like to see?
Good article. What about SAN based storage or users with Direct Attached Storage?
I think OSSV and NetApp's SnapMirror proucts can play a large role here. Unfortunately OSSV+SnapVault+ASIS have some way to go to match the likes of their competitors who already have proven thenselves as a Backup-To-Disk solution.
