NetApp OnCommand Plug-In 4.0 for Microsoft.

We are happy to announce the release of the NetApp® OnCommand® Plug-In 4.0 for Microsoft®.

 

The OnCommand Plug-In for Microsoft (OCPM) integrates with Microsoft System Center for intelligent infrastructure management.  With OCPM you can monitor and manage a NetApp unified storage system (supporting SAN and NAS protocols) and workflow automation processes directly from Microsoft System Center.

 

OCPM offers out-of-the-box integration with System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) and System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM). It includes Windows PowerShell® cmdlets for rapid VM provisioning, cloning, disaster recovery, and other storage activities. In addition, the System Center Orchestrator Integration Packs (OIPs) included in OCPM enable the automation of storage workflows.

 

Key Features of This Release

 

This section describes the key features of the NetApp OnCommand Plug-In 4.0 for Microsoft.

 

  • Support for clustered Data ONTAP 8.2.

 

Supported only via the Clustered Data ONTAP SCOM Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager 2012 SP1. OCPM 4.0 supports monitoring and management of clustered Data ONTAP environments via Clustered Data ONTAP SCOM Management Packs. Windows administrators can monitor the health, performance, and utilization of their NetApp storage infrastructure to help optimize SAN storage and/or SMB shares with these management packs.

As shown in Figure 1, almost all storage objects in clustered Data ONTAP can now be monitored and managed via the management pack.

 

  • Support for the Debug-OCHost cmdlet running on clustered Data ONTAP.

 

 

The Debug-OCHost cmdlet runs diagnostics and checks host configurations on the local machine. It also checks for supported configurations and is one of the first steps in troubleshooting.

OCPM 4.0 now supports the Debug-OCHost cmdlet for troubleshooting installation issues with the Clustered Data ONTAP SCOM Management Pack, which in OCPM 3.2 was supported only for 7-Mode.

 

Open the OnCommand Cmdlets PowerShell console and enter:

 

Debug-OCHost -CheckSettings

 

As shown in Figure 2, invoking the Debug-OCHost cmdlet with the CheckSettings parameter gives a list of configuration settings for OCPM.

       You can also invoke this cmdlet with an additional –All parameter to check all the settings and get instant results on you PowerShell command prompt.

 

       Debug-OCHost -CheckSettings –All

 

 

  • Support for adding or removing management servers from a resource pool.

 

SCOM 2012 contains a new feature: resource pools. A resource pool is a collection of management servers used to load-balance work among themselves and to take over work from a failed member. Resource pools ensure the continuity of monitoring by providing multiple management servers that can take over the monitoring workflows if one of the management servers becomes unavailable.

 

All SCOM servers in a resource pool point to the same SCOM database.

 

The Clustered Data ONTAP Management Pack consists of an OCPM resource pool.

 

As shown in Figure 3, you can add SCOM servers individually to a resource pool by selecting a management server and clicking Clustered Data ONTAP: Add Management Server to OCPM Resource Pool.

As shown in Figure 4, you can also remove SCOM servers from a resource pool by selecting a management server and clicking Clustered Data ONTAP: Remove Management Server from OCPM Resource Pool.

For example, suppose that there are four management Servers in a resource pool. The discovery task would be run from the node where OCPM is installed, but all other tasks, such as alerting and monitoring, can be run in parallel from other nodes that are the part of resource pool.

 

The discovery task cannot be run from other management servers, apart from this other monitoring related tasks can be run from these servers.

 

The 7-Mode Management Pack does not have resource pool dependency; only the Clustered Data ONTAP Management Pack has resource pool dependency.

 

  • Support for discovering and monitoring Data ONTAP 8.2 clusters and Storage Virtual Machines.

 

The Clustered Data ONTAP Management Pack now allows you to monitor Storage Virtual Machines (SVMs) along with Data ONTAP 8.2 clusters

 

As shown in Figure 5, OCPMF9-10-VS1 is the SVM that has been added, along with the Data ONTAP 8.2 cluster, and the total number of SVMs is 1.

With OCPM 4.0, you can now perform the discovery task after adding the storage system from one console. Click the Discover button to run  both the clustered Data ONTAP discovery task and the clustered Data ONTAP virtualization discovery task.

 

 

 

  • Support for discovering and monitoring SMB shares in the clustered Data ONTAP Management Pack.

 

 

With Windows Server® 2012, SMB 3.0 support includes key features such as persistent file handles (continuously available file shares for Hyper-V®), witness protocol, and clustered client failover. These features, when combined with the right shared storage solution, provide the high availability typically associated with a block protocol, with the simplified administration and reduced deployment cost of network file share access. OCPM integration with System Center Operations Manager gives you the flexibility to support iSCSI, Fibre Channel, and FCoE SAN infrastructure as well as SMB 3.0 for deployment simplicity and scale in a NAS environment.

 

 

As shown in Figure 6, storage administrators can monitor and analyze the performance of their SMB 3.0 environment by using the SMB Latency (ms) performance view.

As shown in Figure 7, storage administrators can also monitor and analyze the performance of their SMB 3.0 environment by using the SMB (Operations/sec) performance view.

Storage administrators can also monitor and analyze SMB server details (Figure 8); the list of permissions associated with the SMB server (Figure 9); and the SMB server shares (Figure 10).

Support for discovering and monitoring virtual machines and virtual hard disk files on SMB shares in the clustered Data ONTAP Virtualization Management Pack.

 

The OCPM Clustered Data ONTAP Virtualization Management Pack now supports discovery of a Hyper-V virtual infrastructure that is hosted on SMB shares. For VM's which are hosted on Clustered Data ONTAP storage, the individual vhd's should be connected to VM's for them to get discovered, this not applicable for the 7-Mode SCOM Management pack

 

As shown in Figure 11, the Virtualization Management Pack discovers VMs that have their VHDs hosted on SMB shares. It also checks for inconsistencies and alerts the user of any warnings or critical errors.

Visibility into each storage layer enables storage administrators to quickly find and resolve potential problems and identify affected HyperV VMs.

 

  • Support for new views, including the Cluster Topology Diagram and the Storage Virtual Machine Topology Diagram.

 

The OCPM Clustered Data ONTAP Management Pack supports new views for the Cluster Topology and Storage Virtual Machine. Storage administrators can isolate faults by drilling down into these diagram views.

 

As shown in Figures 12 and 13, these two diagram views help in motoring the health status of all storage objects that are monitored in SCOM.

  • New reports for clustered Data ONTAP storage resources.

 

As shown in Figure 14, OCPM 4.0 contains new reports for managing clustered Data ONTAP by using the following OnCommand Clustered Data ONTAP reports:

 

    1. Clustered Data ONTAP Reporting: Aggregate Committed Space (%) Report
    2. Clustered Data ONTAP Reporting: Storage Virtual Machine Average Latency (ms) Report
    3. Clustered Data ONTAP Reporting: Storage Virtual Machine Deduplication and Compression (%) Report
    4. Clustered Data ONTAP Reporting: Volume Overwrite Reserved Used (KB/day) Report
    5. Clustered Data ONTAP Reporting: Volume Used Space (%) Report
