NetApp Launches New Solutions for Oil and Gas at SEG 2011

Society of Exploration Geophysicists 81st Annual Meeting, San Antonio, Texas, Sept. 18–21, 2011

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) annual conference and exhibition offers the industry's most impressive display of the latest technology and services for companies involved in global oil, gas, and mineral exploration. More than 9,000 delegates from over 85 countries attended the event this year.

During the conference, NetApp and its partners introduced two new solutions that help oil and gas companies make more accurate and profitable drilling decisions:

  • The NetApp® Seismic Processing Solution, which is based on the E-Series platform and Quantum® StorNext®
  • Blueback Reservoir Solution for Enhanced Backup and Tracking of Petrel Project Data

NetApp’s largest SEG presence ever

Of all the years we participated in SEG, this year NetApp had the biggest presence, offering a flurry of activities at and around the show. Hundreds of people visited the NetApp booth to talk with representatives about our new solutions and how these can help them accelerate the pace of exploration. Many joined NetApp at one of the executive luncheons or at a NetApp sponsored partner event.

Partnerships highlighted in the NetApp booth

“All of our major oil and gas partners were represented one way or another in our booth,” said Gavin Keeler, Oil and Gas District Manager at NetApp. The extent of our partnerships and did not go unnoticed.

Introducing the new NetApp Seismic Processing Solution

At SEG, NetApp, together with Quantum, launched the NetApp Seismic Processing Solution that is purpose built for oil and gas exploration organizations to dramatically improve the speed and efficiency of their seismic processing operations. The solution includes the E5460 and the Quantum StorNext file system, and comes bundled with professional services for fastest time to deployment.

Customers all had the opportunity to check out the E5460 system in the booth and were impressed by the industry-leading density (180TB raw disk capacity in just 4U), performance (up to 5GB/s reads) and eager to start testing the solution within their environments.

Enhanced backup and tracking of Petrel project data

Another solution that made its debut at SEG is a new project data management solution for Schlumberger’s Petrel seismic-to-simulation software. It offers enhanced backup and recovery and project tracking and was developed by new NetApp partner Blueback Reservoir, an expert provider of 3D reservoir modeling services and solutions.

As Petrel becomes a more significant part of our customers' subsurface workflows, the size and complexity of Petrel projects often become difficult to manage and costly to maintain. Working together, Blueback Reservoir, NetApp, and Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) developed this unique solution that allows users to create both automatic and on-demand Snapshot copies of Petrel projects and gives data managers the ability to maintain the order and structure of their Petrel environment.

SIS and Blueback Reservoir demonstrated their integrated data protection capabilities in the NetApp booth.

Joint presentation and cocktail hour in the Schlumberger Ocean booth

Many attendees listened to a joint presentation in the Schlumberger Ocean booth, where NetApp, Blueback Reservoir, and Apache Corporation presented the new backup and recovery plug-in for Petrel that offers quick, incremental backups and restores of Petrel projects and has the ability to name backups.

Customer events

In addition to activities in the NetApp and Ocean booths, NetApp, together with its partners, organized a number of by-invitation-only events at nearby venues. These were well attended and offered plenty of opportunities for customers to listen to subject matter experts, take part in the discussion, and exchange ideas with peers.
