photo-5.JPGOn Tuesday, November 5, 50 companies were honored by the Silicon Valley Business Journal at the newspaper’s Bay Area Corporate Philanthropy Awards event. Of the 50 honorees, NetApp was ranked #16 for its $1.3 million total cash donations in the Bay Area during the past year.

Second Harvest Food Bank, one of the first nonprofits NetApp supported, was the largest recipient organization, receiving over $97,000 in charitable contributions from NetApp and our employees.

NetApp’s history of supporting Second Harvest began in 1994, when about 40 NetApp employees held a holiday fundraiser and donated their first gift of $1,761.20. We continued that tradition of fighting hunger again this year with corporate sponsorships and employee-led drives.

For the sixth consecutive year, NetApp donated $50,000 to be the presenting sponsor of Second Harvest’s Stop Childhood Hunger summer food drive. From May through July, the drive raised $2 million, or enough to provide 4 million meals—which is the largest donation and number of meals provided through a single campaign in the organization’s history—to feed hungry children who don’t receive free school lunches or breakfasts when the school year ends.

In addition, NetApp donated $10,000 to Second Harvest for the National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, helping to make it the largest single-day food drive in the nation.

We kicked off our own summer food drive with our Executive Chef Day event. During this event, executives and interns work together to prepare and sell specially priced meals in our café, with 100% of the proceeds donated to Second Harvest. Through our chefs competing for top sales of their specialty food items and employees donating online, we raised $5,200 in two hours. Through the rest of the summer, individuals and teams held raffles, participated in competitions, and donated online to raise another $12,706.

NetApp ended the summer by showcasing our culture of giving and our history with Second Harvest to our customers and partners at VMworld. For the first time, we incorporated a charity sports challenge through which we donated $10 to Second Harvest for each “point” participants scored at the football, basketball, and baseball mini-game booths. NetApp partners, customers, and employees demonstrated their athletic abilities to help us make an $11,840 donation.

In total, our combined efforts provided 194,000 meals for hungry families in need. This represents just one of the many accomplishments we achieved this past year as part of earning recognition as one of the Bay Area’s top corporate philanthropists.

Congratulations to NetApp and all our employees for the great work we performed in our communities! If you’d like to help make a difference in our communities this holiday season you can donate to Second Harvest online at http://www.shfb.org/donate.
