Data ONTAP SMI-S 5.0 provider is now available. Let’s take a look at some key features in this release -
Clustered DATA ONTAP support (DATA ONTAP 8.2)
Users can now add DATA ONTAP 8.2 storage systems and perform storage management tasks for both SAN and SMB environments using System Center 2012 SP1.
SMI-S 5.0 will continue to support 7-mode systems.
SMB 3.0 protocol support
With Windows server 2012, Microsoft supports hosting Hyper-V VMs on SMB shares. Data ONTAP 8.2 supports SMB 3.0, which means user can now provision and manage CIFS shares that are continuously available and host VMs on them. With SMI-S 5.0, this entire activity and much more can be done through SCVMM 2012 SP1. In addition to supporting CIFS protocol, SMI-S 5.0 will continue to support iSCSI and FCP for SAN workflows.
Support for Indications
An indication is a CIM event that is the occurrence of a phenomenon of interest. It can be classified as either lifecycle or alert.Lifecycle indications are tracked in SCVMM 2012 SP1. SMI-S 5.0 Agent tracks certain lifecycle indications every five minutes. Lifecycle indications capture any out-of-band operations and report them to the clients. You can use these indications to monitor SMI-S Agent operations.
Support and compliance for SMI-S 1.5/1.6 via Conformance Testing Program (CTP) from SNIA
SMI-S 5.0 supports and is compliant with SMI-S 1.5 and 1.6 versions
