The Data Centre: a Unique Ecosystem

Posted by john rollason in JR's IT Pad on Jun 5, 2013 7:58:10 AM

What is an ecosystem? After 47 seconds of in-depth research on the internet, I found that it is a community of living organisms (plants, animals and microbes) in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment (things like air, water and mineral soil), interacting as a system. So I guess that makes the Data Centre ecosystem we work within, a community of organisations (vendors, partners, IT Departments, consultants, developers) in conjunction with the components of their environment (real estate, hardware infrastructure, software, applications and end-users), interacting as a system.

Ecosystems all over the planet have taken gazillions of years to evolve, and do so very slowly. Even in the world of industry & commerce things move relatively slowly [at least before IT came along], for example Boswells department store in Oxford, near where I live, are celebrating their 275th anniversary! In contrast, the Data Centre ecosystem is barely 40 years old and is changing faster than ever. None of us can really keep up. But that’s why it’s so challenging. And why there is massive opportunity in our market, affecting everyone. To make matters even more interesting, the innovation in our ecosystem can, & does, come from anywhere – from a teenager in their bedroom to IBM, with many thousands of companies in between. Venture Capital is the catalyst that adds fuel to this ecosystem fire.

Thank you to our panel.jpgA unique opportunity

In two weeks’ time, NetApp will host our annual Partner & Pathways EMEA summit. This time in Venice, famous as the Manchester of the South. And I have a unique privilege to be hosting a Q&A panel session on stage with 6 of the biggest players in the Data Centre ecosystem – Cisco, Citrix, Microsoft, Fujitsu, SAP & VMware. We will discuss how big industry trends such as Cloud Computing, Big Data, Converged Infrastructure and the Software-Defined Data Centre impact the Data Centre ecosystem. What is hype and what is real? Where is the biggest opportunity? What is the biggest threat? How do these trends impact our target markets? How will the IT eco-system need to evolve ? How can we collaborate to accelerate these trends? Is there such a thing as a Software-Defined Toothbrush?

Help – please send me your toughest questions!!

The title of the session is JR’s IT Pad Blog LIVE! We want to ask & answer your questions. Please use the comments field below or send them via Twitter to me @JohnRollason. For those of you joining us in Venice, there will also be opportunities to submit questions live. And, unlike Fight Club, I will write a blog post after the event and let you know what happens ….. {to be continued}
