It was not all that long ago that Google welcomed in the “first day of summer 2013” with this great doodle and NetApp announced the release of clustered Data ONTAP 8.2. Several OnCommand® management products followed including System Manager 3.0, the latest version of our element management software that simplifies the configuration and ongoing management of NetApp storage.
We recently posted an overview of new and enhanced workflows introduced with OnCommand® System Manager 3.0 and available for clustered Data ONTAP 8.2. Here’s a quick glimpse at a popular use case and the workflows for managing NetApp® storage systems running clustered Data ONTAP 8.2.
New Workflow Example:
With System Manager 3.0, setting up a storage virtual machine (SVM), also known as a Vserver, and configuring data protocols on the SVM has been simplified for clustered Data ONTAP 8.2.
Set Up SVM and Configure Data Protocols
A user wants to set up an SVM, formerly known as Vserver, and allow data protocols on the volumes in the SVM. As part of this workflow, we do the following:
- Set up a SVM
- Configure data protocols on the SVM.
- Set up a SVM administrator account.
The new storage virtual machine simplified setup workflow from System Manager 3.0 lets you create a SVM, configure CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, FC, and FCoE data protocols on the SVM and delegate administration of the SVM in five simple steps. The workflow guide focuses on new and enhanced workflows for clustered Data ONTAP 8.2.
The other System Manager 3.0 workflows covered in the workflow guide for clustered Data ONTAP 8.2 clusters are:
- Simplified SnapVault setup and management workflows
- Enhanced SnapMirror setup and manage workflows
- Simplified cluster peer setup workflows
- Workflow to create and manage CIFS Local Users and Groups
- Continuously available CIFS share workflow
For any specific workflow that is not listed in this document, refer to the “OnCommand System Manager 3.0 Help for Use with Clustered Data ONTAP” guide for support information.
The System Manager 3.0 release also includes existing workflows from the System Manager 2.2 release.
For information on System Manager 2.2 workflows, you can refer to TR-4031: “System Manager 2.2 Workflow Guide.” This guide lists the most common workflows used by storage administrators for the configuration and ongoing management of storage controllers, both for 7-Mode and clustered Data ONTAP operations.
