Our friends at CommVault recently blogged on “EMC’s Antique Data Protection Roadshow.” It’s worth reading to understand how a modern backup system differs from the old legacy ways of doing things, specifically for VMware data protection. CommVault’s blogger, Jeff Echols, discusses the use of integrated, array-based snapshots for critical VMs and applications and LAN-free backup and recovery. Many people will especially appreciate his point on how built-in workflows can automate things like DR and DR testing. And though I appreciate the technical arguments we make every day, equally important is where the rubber meets the road, and that’s in real-world customer environments.
Recently, Forrester published a report entitled “The Total Economic Impact of SnapProtect and Integrated Data Protection”, which explains in economic terms, the advantages of modern DP. Gleaned from several customer experiences with NetApp Integrated Data Protection, Forrester profiles a composite organization that achieves a 3-year ROI of 70% and a payback of 17 months. This ROI is achieved through a combination of backup and restore efficiency, maintenance efficiency, and cost avoidance. If data protection is eating up your budget, check out this Forrester TEI report.
