Gartner announced this week that they’re retiring the Magic Quadrant for storage resource management and SAN management software.  This is bittersweet news for many who are concerned with the challenges of data storage management however it indicates that this market has hit a level of maturity, it’s seen consolidation through acquisitions, and it’s clear who the market leaders are for the foreseeable future.

I’m proud of NetApp’s data storage management accomplishments to date. The NetApp OnCommand management portfolio offers NetApp customers a range of management products for configuring (System Manager), storage provisioning and protection (Unified Manager) and reporting (Report) for NetApp storage. The latest addition, Workflow Automation, has received accolades from many of our customers who value the time and cost savings, with the ability to do storage workflow automation on the fly.

NetApp also offers two management products for heterogeneous environments. OnCommand Balance lets you optimize the performance of heterogeneous, virtualized environments. Balance helps you identify performance bullies and troubleshoot problems to maintain peak performance. OnCommand Insight provides complete visibility and lets you perform root cause analysis even in the most complex, multi-vendor environments. Insight has “what-if” analysis capabilities that let you plan and validate migrations and data center relocations or consolidations. It also delivers enterprise reporting on utilization and costs for storage chargeback and showback, and it integrates with other reporting systems.

I fully expect to see NetApp OnCommand and the FlexPod® data center platform in Gartner research to come, especially when global companies continue to grapple with how to manage exponential data growth, Big Data, and growing storage costs. Gartner said that they will focus on the value of the SRM offerings, with guidance on the best products to manage complex storage. I am looking forward to their continued coverage in a future format, as part of the storage industry.
