After 2 years of development, the new, enhanced OnCommand System Manager is generally available.

System Manager is the simple yet powerful browser-based management tool that enables administrators to easily configure and manage individual NetApp storage systems.  It represents the 'Control' capability of the OnCommand management software family.  With System Manager, IT generalists can now easily manage storage.

System Manager 2.0 is the successor to the Windows®-only System Manager 1.0 as well as FilerView®.  It comes with wizards and workflows, simplifying common storage tasks such as creating volumes, LUNS, qtrees, shares, and exports – saving time and preventing errors.

Key features:

  • Intuitive browser-based GUI
  • Easy wizard-driven setup
  • CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, FC configuration
  • Active Directory® and LDAP support
  • Disk aggregate management
  • Storage provisioning
  • Snapshot management
  • SnapMirror®, SyncMirror®, and SnapLock® support
  • vFiler® and Vserver management
  • VMware® ESX integration
  • Support for Data ONTAP® 7.2.3 and beyond

Regarding the power of System Manager, it’s important to note that this is the graphical interface for Data ONTAP.  System Manager makes it easy to use storage efficiency features such as thin provisioning, compression, and deduplication, as well as other advanced Data ONTAP operating system capabilities.  And maybe most important, System Manager is the management tool for Data ONTAP 8.1 operating in Cluster-Mode, so it can now be graphically managed with wizards that help ensure error-free administration.

System Manager is already getting positive reviews – there were some 9,000 involved in the public beta, resulting in glowing feedback: “Well done, nice interface, intuitive”, “I really like the new interface, and SnapMirror® is a welcome addition” and, “Great job regarding the GUI”.

There is no additional cost to use System Manager. No license is required, entitlement and support comes with a purchase of NetApp FAS or V-Series hardware.

The new System Manager is available for download from the NetApp Support site.
