This Tech OnTap article examines a relatively new NetApp technology: space reclamation. Space reclamation helps you conserve and re-use disk space already allocated to LUNs, and has been integrated into NetApp SnapDrive for Windows 5.0. To understand space reclamation, you have to remember that when you assign a LUN to a host, the host creates its own file system on the LUN and does its own bookkeeping. As a result, the host can have a very different idea of how much space it is currently using within the LUN than the storage system has.

Thanks for posting this Friea. I'm not sure how many folks actually knew about this functionality inside of SnapDrive (5.0 and later). I'm curious to know if many folks know about this feature, and if they use it. If they do use it, how do they use it? ?:| I'm full of questions today I think. ![]()
Great article and this looks as a very nice feature. I was aware of this new feature, but we have never test it. We need to upgrade our snapdrives to version 5 first. This is planed for the next months and then we'll test this. I hoop that we get the same results as in the article.
