TR3702 version 3.0 Netapp Storage Best Practices for Microsoft Virtualization

Hi, does anyone have an update on TR3702 version 3.0 (Netapp Storage Best Pracctices for Microsoft Virtualization)? It was suppose to have been released in late October but I cannot find it anywhere in the Now site. I've also inquired at Netapp but no one seems to know anything relating to it. If anyone out there has the latest version of this document, can you kindly ping me back. As always, thanking you in advanced.

SNAPDRIVE 6.2 & Snapmanager for Hyper-V BETA

Hi everyone. Does anyone know how I can obtain a beta/trial version for SD 6.2 & Snapmanager for Hyper-V? I am interested in these two softwares as I am currently running Hyper-V in a Clustered environment. I have found a lot of bugs in SD 6.1 & would love to see if these are fixed in SD 6.2. I would also like to see what are the backup/restore capabilities for VMs using the new snapmanager for Hyper-V. We are doing some creative backup/restore using a combination of a 3rd party software along with snapmirror.

System manager - SNMP error when trying to add a controller

I've been trying to add one of the controller pairs in the sydney lab to system manager running on my laptop, and every time I try to do so, I get one of the following errors

1. If I try to add slab3040b directly as the first filer I get a little red exclamaiton mark which if you hover over it says "system slab3040b did not respond to snmp queries'

2. If I try to add slab3040a (its partner), this succeeds, but it asks for me to enter the partner manually I get a slightly different error message

"No SNMP response from 10.128.56.91 with OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.789.1.2.3.0"

It turns out there is something funky in our network settings that are blocking ICMP and SNMP packets to from this one address, and there are oddly unhelpful error messages on the console of the filer

I'm still trying to work out exactly what the networking problem is, however I can still access slab3040b via filerview, so there is clearly something odd going on. If this happened to me in our relatively simple lab network, I assume the same might be true in a more complex customer network. It might be nice to have other connect options (e.g. zapi over https) rather than just snmp.

Just a thought.

NetApp System Manager - beta feedback

Hi Guys,

I just got hold of NSM and it looks really pretty, so much better than the web interface. I wonder if you still accept feature requests for the product.

I'd love to get a centralized view of my aggregates/volumes/luns/init groups. It's a bit tiresome to switch views every time I need to check something out. I'm thinking of a folder tree-like view of every element of the device.

The current LUN view has a major downside: I cannot immediatly see which lun is assigned to which initiator. The web interface had this info on one page, now I have to click thru all LUNS to get this info, which is kinda painful .

The LUN level snapshot management is a bit misleading... it shows the volume snapshots and not the LUN snaps. Whereas the LUN level snapshot functionality is not even wired into the interface (I wonder if this this is intentional?)

renaming an initiator group gave me an error stating that this operation has to be done with the -f switch. Yet, the rename was successful.

Moving MS Windows 2005 Cluster LUNs to another Filer Head

Hello,

Well our storage folks have a need to take our filers down and rebuild the aggregates with more random drive selections to increase the performance of our production SQL Server environment. I am the DBA in charge of the OS and SQL Server side of things, and not a storage or NetApp person at all.

We have 2 3070 Filers setup as a cluster pair on the storage side. Currently all of the SQL LUN's and cluster Quorum LUN is on one filer, along with the databases.

We have the ability of rebuilding the aggregates separately on the filer heads.

The idea we came up with was to copy the cluster LUNs from one filer to the other so that we can keep the server cluster up and running while the aggregates are being rebuilt. When that is finished, we plan on leaving the cluster LUNs on filer 1 and only database LUNs on filer 2. The current Windows cluster is only on filer 2 at this time.

Has anyone had to trasfer LUN's like this between filers before? The SQL LUNs are fairly easy to do, it is the Quorum drive that concerns me.

So is there a way of migrating the Quorum drive without having to rebuild the production server?

Move traditional to flex vols

Hello,

I've got a 6040 filer running 7.2.4 that is configured completely as traditional volumes. We've hit a limit and would like to move everything to flex volumes. I know I can do this either host based, but figure there's got to be a way storage based.

We've added a couple new shelves of 300G drives so we have about 5TB of new space and have about 16TB of trad volumes.

Any suggestions? looks like snap mover may do it, but I've never used it??
